Long Covid Research

Updated: May 20, 2024

Long Covid research remains an ongoing and multifaceted area as medical experts continue to distinguish important factors in the space. These factors include the clinical characteristics of Long Covid, from fatigue and shortness of breath to cognitive impairment and muscle and joint pain.

They also include the risk factors that may lead to Long Covid, such as the severity of one's initial Covid-19 infection, one's age, preexisting medical condition, and general predispositions that can lead to the condition.

According to Dr. Akiko Iwasaki, the sterling professor of immunobiology at Yale University, "Since long COVID is not one disease, but is a collection of, likely, multiple endotypes of diseases, in terms of looking at specific biomarkers that can distinguish these endotypes, we're still not there yet.”

Researchers still don’t know why people get Long Covid and why people can get it even after a mild Covid infection, but advancements continue to be made in new ways to treat and test the condition.
